A Russian national allegedly working for Kiev was reportedly attempting to plant an explosive in Sverdlovsk Region

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has reported that it has eliminated a Ukrainian operative who was attempting to carry out an attack on a senior employee of a defense enterprise in Sverdlovsk Region.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the FSB claimed that the suspect, a Russian national born in 1984, was acting as an agent of Kiev’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) and was a member of a Ukrainian nationalist terrorist organization.

According to the report, the unnamed suspect’s handlers in Kiev instructed him in making an improvised explosive device (IED), which he intended to use to blow up the car of a senior defense enterprise employee.

The suspect was reportedly confronted while trying to stash the IED in a hiding place. The man opened fire on the authorities and was subsequently killed by return fire, according to the FSB. It’s reported that a Makarov pistol with ammunition was logged as evidence at the scene, as well as a high-power radio-controlled IED and the suspect’s means of communicating with his handlers in Kiev, which contained correspondence proving the preparation of a terrorist attack.

The police also searched the suspect’s private residence and garage, where authorities also found instructions and components intended for the manufacture of explosives.

The FSB published a video showing the body of the deceased suspect with a pistol in his hand as well as footage from the search of his garage, where the authorities reportedly found a number of items apparently used to create the explosive device.
