Nearly 1,000 people gathered at the National Ploughing Championships to attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the number of people throwing a welly at the one time. Youth farming group Macra sought to break the current record of 792, which was set in England five years ago. A count by Macra members said 995 men, women, children and Government ministers took part in the event which was held on day two of the championships. External adjudicators were on hand to try and verify the number. Elaine Houlihan, president of Macra, said: “We beat the English!”
