It’s the sort of development that will have a certain cohort of people tearing their hair out. Regardless, it’s here — the country’s first ever influencer degree. South East Technological University (SETU) will offer a four-year BA in Content Creation and Social Media from their Carlow campus, ostensibly qualifying people to collaborate with brands, build an online audience and create content. It’s a close cousin to PR/digital content courses already in existence, but there’s something about a degree designed to create and qualify influencers that’s really caught people’s ire. Why spend four years on a course when you could spend all that time looking longingly at yourself in a selfie instead? Also, surely to be an influencer of repute, you need a certain X factor? What course will teach you that?
